Massive sequencing of microbial sequences from sponges for WP6 has started. Jon Bent Kristofersen who constructed the MiSeq Illumina library of the 16S barcode, unravelling the bacterial microsymbionts, is a specialist of next-generation sequencing technologies. He used a new “trick” to increase the quality of sequences, by adding the so-called ‘diversity spacers’ in the standard 16S primers. Quality control confirmed his expectations!
